Overview

Microsoft 365, formerly Office 365, is Microsoft's subscription bundle of productivity software and cloud services. It includes the desktop and web versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote, Exchange Online email, OneDrive and SharePoint storage, Teams for chat and meetings, Loop, Planner and Forms, with Microsoft 365 Copilot available as an add-on that brings generative AI into the apps. Administration runs through the Microsoft 365 admin center and Entra ID for identity, conditional access, compliance and device management, and developers automate the platform with Microsoft Graph, Office Add-ins and Power Platform. Business, Enterprise, Education and consumer (Personal and Family) plans are licensed by seat. Excel and Word remain the de facto standards for spreadsheets and documents in finance and academia. Costs accumulate with add-ons, desktop apps are Windows and macOS only, and the breadth of services creates administrative complexity.
