Overview

Power BI is Microsoft's business-intelligence platform. Power BI Desktop, a free Windows application, imports or connects to data through Power Query (M), builds a tabular model with relationships and DAX measures, and composes interactive reports; the Power BI service publishes those reports to the cloud for sharing, scheduled refresh, dashboards, row-level security and mobile access, and is now part of the Microsoft Fabric analytics platform alongside lakehouses, warehouses and real-time analytics. Licensing is sold as individual Free, Pro and Premium licenses or as Fabric capacity, with the Free tier limited to personal use in the service; Power BI Report Server is the on-premises option for organizations with specific agreements.

Power BI is pervasive in organizations standardized on Microsoft 365, and its DAX and tabular engine are strong for financial modeling and KPI reporting. Constraints for researchers are the Windows-only Desktop (no native macOS version), dependence on the Microsoft cloud for collaboration, and a proprietary ecosystem.
