Overview

Zed is a code editor developed by Zed Industries, founded by the creators of the Atom editor and the Tree-sitter parser. It is written in Rust with a custom GPU-accelerated UI framework rather than a web view, which gives it low input latency and modest memory use. Language intelligence comes from bundled Language Server Protocol clients and Tree-sitter grammars; an extension system adds further languages and themes.

Collaboration is built into the editor: users can share a project, edit the same buffers and talk over voice channels without a separate service. The AI features include an assistant panel, inline transformations and an agent panel, with the option to bring keys for external providers, use Zed's hosted plans or connect local models through Ollama. The editor is free and open source (GPL for the client, AGPL for server components); the paid plans cover hosted AI usage. Zed runs on macOS and Linux, with Windows support arriving later than the other platforms. Its extension ecosystem is still smaller than VS Code's, and some workflows such as debugging and remote development matured only recently.

Capabilities

  • GPU-rendered native UI with low latency
  • Built-in LSP and Tree-sitter language support
  • Real-time collaboration with shared projects and voice
  • AI assistant and agent panels with multiple model providers
  • Vim mode and extensive keyboard-driven editing
  • Extension system for languages and themes

Typical workflows

  1. Pair-program on a shared project directly in the editor
  2. Use a local Ollama model for inline assistance
  3. Edit large codebases with minimal resource use

Strengths

  • Native performance and small memory footprint
  • Open-source client under the GPL
  • Collaboration without extra tooling

Limitations

  • Smaller extension ecosystem than VS Code
  • Windows support is newer than macOS and Linux
  • Some IDE features (debugging, remote) are recent

Prerequisites

  • macOS or Linux; Windows builds available more recently

Who it is for

  • Developers who prefer native editors
  • Teams collaborating in real time
  • Users migrating from Sublime Text or Atom

Alternatives & comparison

VS Code and Cursor are Electron-based with a far larger extension catalog; Zed trades that breadth for speed and a built-in collaboration model. Neovim is also fast and keyboard-centric but terminal-bound and configured through Lua rather than a graphical settings surface.
