Overview

Cursor is a desktop code editor developed by Anysphere. It is a fork of Visual Studio Code, so it keeps VS Code's extension marketplace compatibility, keybindings and settings import while replacing the editing experience with AI features built into the core: multi-line tab completion that predicts the next edit, an inline edit command, a chat panel indexed on the whole repository, and an agent mode that plans and applies changes across files, runs terminal commands and iterates on errors. Users can route requests to models from several providers, including Anthropic, OpenAI and Google, or to Anysphere's own models.

Cursor is distributed for macOS, Windows and Linux under a freemium model with paid individual and team plans; a privacy mode that keeps code from being stored by the vendor is documented on its security pages. Limitations include dependence on cloud inference for most features, a closed-source core, and the usual VS Code heritage of Electron memory use. Because the fork tracks upstream VS Code with a delay, some new VS Code features arrive later, and a few Microsoft-licensed extensions are not available in the Cursor marketplace.

Capabilities

  • Predictive multi-line tab completion
  • Inline AI edits scoped to a selection or file
  • Repository-indexed chat with file and documentation references
  • Agent mode for multi-file changes and terminal execution
  • Model choice across several providers
  • Rules files to steer the assistant per project
  • Compatibility with VS Code extensions and settings

Typical workflows

  1. Refactor across a codebase through an agent run, then review the diff
  2. Ask questions about an unfamiliar repository before editing
  3. Generate tests and fix failures iteratively

Strengths

  • Familiar to VS Code users with little retraining
  • AI features integrated in the editor core rather than bolted on
  • Choice of underlying models

Limitations

  • Core is closed source
  • Most features require cloud inference and a subscription for sustained use
  • Tracks upstream VS Code with a lag
  • Some Microsoft extensions unavailable

Prerequisites

  • macOS, Windows or Linux; an account for AI features

Who it is for

  • Developers who want an AI-first editor
  • Teams adopting agentic coding workflows

Alternatives & comparison

VS Code with GitHub Copilot offers a similar feature set inside the original editor and is free for the editor itself; Cursor differentiates through its own completion model and tighter agent integration. Zed takes a native, non-Electron approach with built-in AI and lower resource use. Claude Code and OpenAI Codex are terminal-based agents that work with any editor instead of replacing it.
