PyCharm
by JetBrains · Application · also known as PyCharm Professional, PyCharm Community Edition
Python IDE from JetBrains with deep static analysis, refactoring, debugging, scientific tooling and a unified free core with a paid Pro tier
Overview
PyCharm is an integrated development environment for Python developed by JetBrains on the IntelliJ platform. It provides project-wide static analysis, type inference, refactorings, a graphical debugger, test runner integration, a database tool window and support for web frameworks, Jupyter notebooks and scientific libraries. Since 2025 JetBrains distributes a single PyCharm application whose core features are free, with a Pro subscription unlocking additional capabilities such as remote development and advanced data-science tooling; this replaced the separate Community and Professional editions.
The IDE is a common choice for developers who prefer a fully configured environment over an editor assembled from extensions. Its weight is the main caveat: PyCharm is a JVM application that uses considerably more memory and starts more slowly than VS Code or Zed, and large monorepos can take time to index. The open-source IntelliJ Community platform underlying it is Apache-2.0 licensed, while the PyCharm product itself is distributed under JetBrains' proprietary terms.

Alternatives & comparison
VS Code reaches similar Python support through extensions and is lighter, but PyCharm bundles analysis and refactoring without configuration. Positron is a newer data-science IDE built on the VS Code codebase with first-class Python and R consoles; RStudio remains R-centric. PyCharm is the stronger choice for application code and refactoring, the others for exploratory analysis.
