Neovim
by Neovim project · Application · also known as nvim
Modal, terminal-based text editor forked from Vim with Lua configuration, a built-in LSP client and Tree-sitter parsing
Overview
Neovim is a community-maintained fork of the Vim text editor that modernized its architecture while keeping Vim's modal editing model and most of its configuration compatibility. It runs in a terminal (or through external GUIs that speak its RPC protocol), is configured in Lua, and ships a built-in Language Server Protocol client, Tree-sitter syntax parsing, an embedded terminal emulator and asynchronous job control.
It is typically assembled into a personal development environment through plugins managed by lazy.nvim or similar, or installed as a preconfigured distribution such as LazyVim or AstroNvim. Developers who work over SSH on remote nodes value that the whole editor lives in the terminal session. The caveats are a steep learning curve for modal editing and Lua configuration, the maintenance burden of a plugin set, and the absence of graphical tooling such as visual debuggers unless added by plugins. The license is Apache-2.0 for Neovim's own code, with legacy Vim-licensed portions.
Capabilities

Typical workflows
- Edit code on a remote server inside a tmux session
- Build a tailored IDE from plugins and language servers
- Use a distribution such as LazyVim for a ready-made setup
Strengths
- Runs anywhere a terminal does
- Low latency and resource use
- Fully scriptable in Lua
Limitations
- Steep learning curve
- Plugin configuration requires ongoing maintenance
- No graphical debugger without plugins
Prerequisites
- A terminal; package manager install (Homebrew, apt) or release binary
Who it is for
- Developers working over SSH
- Vim users wanting modern features
- Keyboard-centric power users
Alternatives & comparison
VS Code provides a graphical, extension-driven environment that needs little configuration; Neovim offers the opposite trade-off with full control and terminal portability. Zed is a native graphical editor with a Vim mode, which suits users who want modal editing without living entirely in the terminal.
