Overview

Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool. Given a task in plain language it explores the repository, plans, edits files across the project, runs shell commands and tests, and can commit, open pull requests and interact with git directly. It started as a terminal program and now runs on several surfaces that share one engine and one configuration: the CLI, VS Code and Cursor extensions, a JetBrains plugin, a standalone desktop app for macOS and Windows (Linux in beta), a browser version at claude.ai/code and the Claude mobile apps, plus GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, Slack and Chrome integrations.

Customization is file-based. A CLAUDE.md (or an existing AGENTS.md) in the repository supplies standing instructions; skills package reusable slash-command workflows; hooks run shell commands before or after tool calls; settings files control permissions; and MCP servers connect external tools and data. Subagents run parts of a task in parallel under a lead agent, background agents run whole sessions side by side, and scheduled tasks run in the cloud or on the desktop. Headless mode (claude -p) makes it scriptable in pipelines, and the Agent SDK exposes the same tool loop for building custom agents. Sessions can move between surfaces through Remote Control and --teleport.

Installation is a native installer script, Homebrew, WinGet or Linux package managers; the desktop app bundles the CLI. Use requires a Claude subscription or a Claude Platform (console) account, and the terminal and IDE surfaces also support third-party model providers such as Amazon Bedrock and Google Vertex AI. The published repository holds documentation, issues and examples, but the source is proprietary (all rights reserved under Anthropic's commercial terms), so it cannot be forked or self-hosted. Because the agent executes commands with the user's privileges, permission settings and sandboxing deserve attention before use on sensitive systems.

Capabilities

  • Repository-aware editing across many files with command execution and test runs
  • Git integration: commits, branches, pull requests and CI code review
  • CLAUDE.md/AGENTS.md instructions, skills, hooks and settings-based permissions
  • MCP client for connecting external tools and data sources
  • Subagents, background agents and dynamic workflows for parallel work
  • Headless mode for scripting and CI, plus the Agent SDK
  • Terminal, VS Code, Cursor, JetBrains, desktop, web and mobile surfaces
  • Cloud and desktop scheduled tasks, Remote Control and session teleport

Typical workflows

  1. Describe a feature and let the agent implement, test and commit it
  2. Run `claude -p` in CI to review diffs or triage issues
  3. Connect project databases and ticket systems through MCP servers
  4. Hand a long task to the web or cloud session and pull it back into the terminal later

Strengths

  • Same configuration works across every surface
  • Deep customization through files kept in the repository
  • Works with Anthropic's cloud or with Bedrock and Vertex AI accounts
  • Composable with Unix pipes and existing automation

Limitations

  • Proprietary; the GitHub repository is for docs and issues, not source
  • Requires a paid subscription or API account; usage limits apply
  • Executes commands with user privileges, so permissions must be configured carefully
  • Desktop app on Linux is still in beta

Prerequisites

  • Claude subscription or Claude Platform account (or Bedrock/Vertex credentials)
  • macOS, Linux, WSL or Windows; Git recommended

Who it is for

  • Software developers and maintainers
  • Teams automating code review and issue triage in CI
  • Developers building custom agents with the Agent SDK

Alternatives & comparison

OpenAI Codex is the closest counterpart: also a terminal-first agent with IDE extension, desktop and cloud surfaces, but its CLI is open source (Apache-2.0) and it authenticates with a ChatGPT plan. Cursor and Zed are AI-native editors rather than headless agents, and GitHub Copilot's coding agent lives inside GitHub. Claude Code's distinguishing traits are its file-based customization (CLAUDE.md, skills, hooks), subagent orchestration and its multi-surface session hand-off.
