RStudio IDE
by Posit Software, PBC · Application · also known as RStudio, RStudio Desktop, RStudio Server
Posit's open-source integrated development environment for R, with console, editor, plots, environment panes, Quarto/R Markdown authoring and Python via reticulate
Overview
RStudio is the integrated development environment most R users work in, developed by Posit (formerly RStudio, PBC). The open-source desktop edition runs on macOS, Windows and Linux and combines a code editor with completion and diagnostics, an R console, environment and connections panes, a data viewer with filtering, plot and help panes, a visual Markdown editor for Quarto and R Markdown, Git integration, an interactive debugger, package-development tools and publishing to Posit Connect, shinyapps.io and RPubs. Python code can run through the reticulate package. RStudio Server delivers the same interface in a browser from a Linux host, which is how shared research servers typically expose R.
The open-source editions are licensed under the AGPL version 3; Posit sells RStudio Desktop Pro for organizations that cannot accept the AGPL, Posit Workbench for managed multi-user sessions, and an AI assistant add-on. RStudio remains R-first: Python and other languages are supported but Posit's newer Positron IDE targets multi-language data science. Large datasets in the environment pane and long-running sessions can strain the desktop app.
Editorial note on uncertainty. pricing_url omitted: commercial editions are quoted on the product page rather than a dedicated pricing page.
Capabilities
- Code editor with completion, diagnostics and Git integration
- R console, environment, history and connections panes
- Data viewer with sorting and filtering
- Visual editor for Quarto and R Markdown
- Interactive debugger and package-development tools
- RStudio Server for browser-based sessions on Linux
- Publishing to Posit Connect, shinyapps.io and RPubs
- Python execution via reticulate
Typical workflows
- Econometric analysis with scripts, plots and a Quarto report
- Shared R server for a research group via RStudio Server
- Developing and checking an R package
Strengths
- Free and open source (AGPL-3.0)
- Tight integration with the R ecosystem
- Server edition for shared machines
Limitations
- AGPL licence is unacceptable to some organizations (commercial edition exists)
- R-first; weaker for Python-heavy work than Positron or VS Code
- Desktop app can struggle with very large in-memory objects
Prerequisites
- R installed
- macOS, Windows or Linux (Server requires Linux)
Who it is for
- Statisticians and econometricians using R
- Instructors teaching R
- Research groups sharing a compute server
Alternatives & comparison
Positron is Posit's newer multi-language IDE built on Code OSS under the Elastic License; VS Code with the R extension is a general-purpose alternative; Jupyter offers notebooks rather than an IDE. RStudio remains the most R-specific of the four.
- Positron
Posit's multi-language data-science IDE built on Code OSS, with first-class R and Python consoles, variables and plots panes, under the Elastic License 2.0
