Overview

Positron is a desktop IDE for data science from Posit, built on the open-source core of Visual Studio Code (Code OSS) and extended with data-science panes: language consoles for R and Python, a variables explorer, a data viewer, plots and help panes, a connections pane and integrated Quarto support. It uses Posit's Ark kernel for R and standard Jupyter kernels for Python, supports VS Code extensions from Open VSX, and runs on macOS, Windows and Linux.

Positron is source-available under the Elastic License 2.0: it is free for personal, academic and commercial use, and the main restriction is that it cannot be offered as a hosted service to third parties without Posit's agreement; an education rider permits limited hosting for teaching. Some components, such as the Ark R kernel and the Air formatter, are MIT-licensed. Because the project is young, feature parity with RStudio (for example in package development and some R-specific tooling) is still developing, and extensions written for Microsoft's VS Code marketplace are not always available on Open VSX.

Capabilities

  • R and Python consoles with variable and data explorers
  • Plots, help and connections panes
  • Built on Code OSS with Open VSX extensions
  • Quarto authoring and preview
  • Ark Jupyter kernel for R; standard kernels for Python
  • Cross-platform desktop builds

Typical workflows

  1. Mixed R and Python analysis in one window
  2. Writing Quarto documents with live preview

Strengths

  • Multi-language from the start
  • Familiar VS Code editing experience
  • Free for commercial and academic use

Limitations

  • Elastic License restricts hosting as a service
  • Younger than RStudio; some R tooling still maturing
  • Relies on Open VSX rather than the VS Code marketplace

Prerequisites

  • R and/or Python installed

Who it is for

  • Data scientists using both R and Python
  • RStudio users wanting VS Code-style editing

Alternatives & comparison

RStudio is R-first and AGPL-licensed; VS Code is MIT-core with proprietary Microsoft builds and no built-in data panes; Positron sits between them under a source-available licence.
