Vercel
by Vercel Inc. · Platform · also known as ZEIT
Front-end cloud from the makers of Next.js that deploys web applications from git with preview environments, serverless and edge functions and a global CDN
Overview
Vercel is a hosting platform from Vercel Inc., the company that develops Next.js. Connecting a git repository is enough to build and deploy a site on every push, with a unique preview URL per branch or pull request and production deploys from the main branch. Static assets are served from a global CDN, while server-side code runs as serverless functions (the Fluid Compute model), edge middleware or scheduled cron jobs; the platform also offers storage integrations, an AI SDK and gateway, and features aimed at agents and workflows.
It supports many frameworks beyond Next.js (SvelteKit, Nuxt, Astro, Remix and plain static sites) but Next.js features such as incremental static regeneration and image optimization are most complete there. Plans range from a free Hobby tier for personal projects to Pro and Enterprise with team collaboration, observability and compliance features, with usage-based charges for bandwidth and compute.
Trade-offs include costs that scale with traffic, limited control over the runtime compared with a container platform, and platform-specific behaviours that make moving a complex Next.js app elsewhere non-trivial.
Capabilities
- Git-driven deployments with per-branch preview URLs
- Global CDN for static assets and serverless or edge execution for server code
- First-class Next.js support and adapters for other frameworks
- Environment variables, domains, DNS and automatic HTTPS
- Cron jobs, middleware, storage integrations and AI gateway
- Team collaboration, observability and deployment protection
Typical workflows
- Deploy a Next.js application with preview environments for every pull request
- Host a static documentation site with a custom domain
- Run API routes as serverless functions without managing servers
Strengths
- Near-zero configuration for supported frameworks
- Preview deployments integrated with git providers
- Free tier for personal projects
Limitations
- Usage-based costs rise with traffic
- Less runtime control than containers or VMs
- Framework-specific features reduce portability
Prerequisites
- Git repository on GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket
- Vercel account
Who it is for
- Front-end and full-stack web developers
- Teams shipping Next.js applications
Alternatives & comparison
Fly.io runs full containers close to users and suits long-lived servers and databases; Cloudflare Pages and Workers compete on static and edge hosting with a different runtime; AWS offers the underlying primitives (Amplify, Lambda, CloudFront) with more configuration.
- Amazon Web Services
Amazon's public cloud with hundreds of usage-billed services spanning compute (EC2, Lambda), storage (S3), databases (RDS), networking, AI (Bedrock) and analytics
ProprietaryUsage-based - Cloudflare
Global network offering authoritative DNS, CDN and reverse-proxy security, a domain registrar, Zero Trust access and the Workers serverless platform
ProprietaryFreemium - Fly.io
Platform that runs Docker images as Fly Machines (Firecracker microVMs) in regions around the world with anycast routing, private networking and managed Postgres
ProprietaryUsage-based - Supabase
Open-source backend platform built around a dedicated PostgreSQL database with auto-generated APIs, authentication, file storage, realtime subscriptions and edge functions
