Overview

Google Cloud is the public cloud platform of Google LLC. Core services include Compute Engine virtual machines, Google Kubernetes Engine (the managed Kubernetes offering from the company where Kubernetes originated), Cloud Run for containers without servers, Cloud Storage for objects, Cloud SQL and AlloyDB for PostgreSQL and MySQL, and BigQuery, a serverless data warehouse that is a frequent reason organizations adopt the platform. Vertex AI hosts Gemini and third-party models with tuning, evaluation and agent tooling, and Cloud KMS, IAM and VPC cover security and networking.

Services are managed through the console, the gcloud CLI, client libraries and Terraform, with usage-based billing, a free tier and committed-use discounts. Documentation has moved to docs.cloud.google.com.

Its footprint and catalogue are smaller than AWS in some areas, pricing models differ by service, and like other hyperscalers it requires IAM and cost expertise to run economically.

Capabilities

  • Virtual machines, managed Kubernetes (GKE) and serverless containers (Cloud Run)
  • Cloud Storage objects and Cloud SQL, AlloyDB and Spanner databases
  • BigQuery serverless analytics warehouse
  • Vertex AI for hosted Gemini and partner models
  • IAM, KMS, VPC networking and global load balancing
  • gcloud CLI, client libraries and Terraform provider

Typical workflows

  1. Analyze large datasets in BigQuery from SQL or notebooks
  2. Deploy a container to Cloud Run with automatic scaling
  3. Call Gemini models through Vertex AI with enterprise controls

Strengths

  • Strong data analytics and Kubernetes offerings
  • Access to Google models within the same platform
  • Global private network

Limitations

  • Smaller regional footprint and catalogue than AWS in places
  • Service-specific pricing models complicate forecasting
  • Requires IAM and billing expertise

Prerequisites

  • Google Cloud account with billing

Who it is for

  • Data and analytics teams
  • Kubernetes-centric engineering teams
  • Developers building on Gemini

Alternatives & comparison
