Neon
by Neon (Databricks) · Database · also known as Neon Postgres, Neon Serverless Postgres
Serverless PostgreSQL service with separated storage and compute, instant database branching and scale-to-zero, now part of Databricks
Overview
Neon is a managed PostgreSQL service whose engine separates compute from a custom multi-tenant storage layer, so databases can scale compute independently, suspend to zero when idle and resume on the next connection. Its signature feature is branching: a copy-on-write branch of a database, including data, is created almost instantly, which lets each pull request, test run or AI agent work against an isolated copy. The company was acquired by Databricks in 2025 and its homepage now presents Neon as a backend from Databricks built on Lakebase Postgres, with add-ons for authentication, a REST data API, functions, object storage and an AI gateway.
The storage and compute code is open source under Apache-2.0, though the hosted control plane is proprietary and self-hosting the full system is not a documented product path. Any PostgreSQL driver or ORM connects normally, and a CLI, API and MCP server support automation.
Cold starts after suspension add latency to the first query, extension support is limited to an approved list, and the acquisition means roadmap and branding are evolving.
Capabilities
- Serverless PostgreSQL with autoscaling compute and scale-to-zero
- Copy-on-write database branching for environments and tests
- Separated storage layer with point-in-time restore
- Standard PostgreSQL wire protocol plus a serverless HTTP driver
- CLI, REST API, Terraform provider and MCP server
- Add-ons for auth, data API, functions, object storage and AI gateway
Typical workflows
- Create a database branch per pull request in CI
- Run a side project's Postgres that costs nothing while idle
- Give an AI agent an isolated branch to experiment on
Strengths
- Branching changes how test and preview databases are handled
- Pure PostgreSQL compatibility for drivers and ORMs
- Apache-2.0 engine source
Limitations
- Cold-start latency after suspension
- Approved-extension list rather than arbitrary extensions
- Hosted control plane only; no supported self-hosting
Prerequisites
- Neon account
- PostgreSQL client or ORM
Who it is for
- Application developers
- Teams wanting ephemeral databases in CI
- Developers building agent workflows
Alternatives & comparison
Supabase bundles auth, storage and APIs around a conventional Postgres instance; Neon focuses on the database engine with branching and serverless economics. Self-managed PostgreSQL gives full control and extension freedom at the cost of operations.
