Overview

Fly.io is a hosting platform from Fly.io, Inc. that takes a container image or Dockerfile and runs it as one or more Fly Machines, lightweight virtual machines based on Firecracker, in a chosen set of regions. Incoming traffic reaches the nearest region over anycast and is proxied to the app; machines can be started and stopped quickly, scaled by count or size, and attached to persistent volumes. Private networking over WireGuard connects an organization's apps, and the same tunnel lets developers reach them from their laptops with the flyctl CLI.

The platform targets developers who want their application closer to users than a single-region VPS allows without adopting Kubernetes. Managed Postgres, the Sprites sandbox product and a Machines API for programmatic orchestration round out the offering, and billing is usage-based on compute, storage and bandwidth.

It is a smaller company than the hyperscalers, with a history of candid incident reports; operational responsibility for application-level concerns remains with the developer, and some features (such as the earlier unmanaged Postgres) have required care.

Capabilities

  • Deploy container images as Firecracker microVMs in many regions
  • Anycast ingress with automatic TLS and a global proxy
  • Fly Machines API for start, stop and scale operations
  • Private WireGuard networking between apps and developer machines
  • Persistent volumes and managed Postgres
  • flyctl CLI with GitHub Actions deployment

Typical workflows

  1. Deploy a Dockerized API to several regions near users
  2. Run a long-lived background worker that scales to zero when idle
  3. Attach a managed Postgres database to an application

Strengths

  • Simple path from Dockerfile to multi-region deployment
  • Fast machine start and stop for scale-to-zero patterns
  • Built-in private networking

Limitations

  • Smaller provider with fewer managed services
  • Application-level reliability remains the developer's responsibility
  • Usage-based costs across regions need monitoring

Prerequisites

  • Docker image or Dockerfile
  • Fly.io account and flyctl

Who it is for

  • Developers deploying containers without Kubernetes
  • Teams needing multi-region latency

Alternatives & comparison
