Discord
by Discord Inc. · Platform
Community chat platform with servers, text and voice channels, video, forums and a bot API, free to use with optional Nitro subscriptions
Overview
Discord is a communication platform from Discord Inc. organised into servers that contain text, voice, video, stage and forum channels, with roles and permissions, threads, reactions and rich media. Originally built for gaming communities, it now hosts open-source projects, research groups, classrooms and product communities because servers are free to create and scale to very large memberships. The developer platform provides a REST and gateway API, slash commands, interactive components, webhooks and OAuth2, and bots are a core part of most servers for moderation, notifications and integrations. Revenue comes from Nitro subscriptions and server boosts that unlock larger uploads and higher-quality streaming, with the base product free. It is cloud-only, has no self-hosted option, offers fewer compliance and administrative controls than enterprise chat tools, and its consumer orientation can make it a poor fit for regulated workplaces.
