Figma
In-depth entryby Figma, Inc. · Platform · also known as FigJam, Figma Design, Figma Dev Mode
Browser-based collaborative interface design platform with vector editing, components, prototyping, FigJam whiteboards, Dev Mode and a plugin and REST API
Overview
Figma is a cloud-based design platform from Figma, Inc. and the dominant tool in the design and prototyping category for user-interface work. It runs in the browser and in desktop wrappers for macOS and Windows, with mobile apps for viewing and mirroring. Designers draw vector interfaces with auto layout, build reusable components and variables shared through team libraries, and create clickable prototypes with transitions and conditional logic. Multiple people edit the same file simultaneously with cursors, comments and version history.
Around the core editor sit FigJam for whiteboarding and workshops, Figma Slides for presentations, Dev Mode for engineers to inspect measurements, tokens and generated code snippets, and newer AI-assisted features for generating layouts and prototypes. A plugin API runs JavaScript inside the editor, and a REST API exposes files, nodes, comments, variables and rendered images, which allows design-token pipelines and documentation sites to pull from the source file. The Community hub distributes templates, plugins and UI kits.
Teams use Figma as the shared source of truth between product, design and engineering; researchers and lecturers use it for mockups, figures and teaching materials. Plans range from a free tier to Professional, Organization and Enterprise, priced per editor seat and product.
Constraints: files live in Figma's cloud with limited offline capability and proprietary .fig export; per-seat pricing across several products adds up; very large files and libraries can slow the editor; and design-to-code output is a starting point rather than production code, so hand-off still depends on team conventions.
Capabilities
- Vector UI design with auto layout, components and variables
- Interactive prototyping with transitions and logic
- Real-time multiplayer editing, comments and version history
- FigJam whiteboards and Figma Slides
- Dev Mode inspection with code snippets and design tokens
- Plugin API and REST API for automation
- Community templates, plugins and UI kits
Typical workflows
- Design a responsive app screen set from a shared component library
- Run a remote workshop in FigJam and convert outcomes to designs
- Export design tokens to code through the REST API
Strengths
- Browser-based collaboration with no installation
- Rich ecosystem of plugins and community files
- Single file as the source for design and hand-off
Limitations
- Cloud-only storage and limited offline mode
- Per-seat pricing across multiple products
- Large files can degrade performance
- Generated code requires engineering refinement
Prerequisites
- Figma account; modern browser or desktop app
Who it is for
- Product and UX designers
- Front-end engineers consuming hand-off
- Educators and researchers producing mockups and figures
Alternatives & comparison
Excalidraw and draw.io are diagramming tools, not interface design systems; they suit sketches and architecture diagrams where Figma would be excessive. Mermaid generates diagrams from text for documentation. Notion embeds Figma files but offers no design tooling. Dedicated competitors such as Sketch or Penpot are not covered in this encyclopedia.
