shadcn/ui
by shadcn · Library · also known as shadcn, shadcn-ui
Collection of accessible React components built on Radix primitives and Tailwind CSS that are copied into a project's source rather than installed as a dependency
Overview
shadcn/ui is a set of React user-interface components created by the developer known as shadcn and released under the MIT license. Its distribution model differs from conventional component libraries: a command-line tool copies the source of each component (button, dialog, data table, form, chart and so on) into the project, where it becomes application code the team owns and edits. Components are built on headless, accessible primitives, principally Radix UI, and styled with Tailwind CSS using design tokens defined as CSS variables.
The approach gives full control over markup and styling and avoids version lock-in, at the price of taking on maintenance: updates to a component upstream are not applied automatically. The registry system lets teams publish their own component collections, and the project also provides blocks (composed sections such as dashboards and authentication pages) and theme tooling. shadcn/ui is widely used with Next.js and is the default component layer of many AI-generated front ends. Caveats are the Tailwind and React requirement, divergence between a project's copies and upstream over time, and the need for a design eye since the defaults are deliberately neutral.
Capabilities
- CLI that copies component source into the project
- Accessible components based on Radix primitives
- Tailwind CSS styling with CSS variable theming
- Blocks for composed page sections
- Custom registries for sharing components
- Chart and data-table components
Typical workflows
- Scaffold a Next.js dashboard with blocks and components
- Publish an internal component registry for several apps
- Adjust a component's markup directly in the codebase
Strengths
- Full ownership of component code
- Accessible defaults
- MIT license, no runtime dependency on the library
Limitations
- No automatic upstream updates
- Requires React and Tailwind CSS
- Neutral defaults need design work
Prerequisites
- A React project with Tailwind CSS (Next.js, Vite or similar)
Who it is for
- React developers
- Teams building internal tools and dashboards
Alternatives & comparison
Tailwind CSS and React are dependencies rather than competitors; conventional packaged component libraries such as MUI or Chakra are the alternatives in approach, delivering components as versioned npm dependencies with theming APIs instead of copied source.
