Overview

Tailwind CSS is a CSS framework developed by Tailwind Labs and released under the MIT license. Instead of pre-designed components, it provides a vocabulary of small utility classes (spacing, color, typography, layout, responsive and state variants) that are composed directly in markup; a build step scans source files and emits only the classes actually used, so stylesheets stay small regardless of the utility catalog.

Version 4 rewrote the engine for speed and moved configuration from a JavaScript file to CSS itself, using native cascade layers, custom properties and a Vite plugin or PostCSS integration. Tailwind is the styling layer assumed by shadcn/ui and many Next.js templates, and the company sells Tailwind Plus (templates and component examples) as a commercial product separate from the open-source framework. Objections to Tailwind concern readability of long class strings, the learning of its naming scheme, and the need for a build pipeline; framework-specific gotchas, such as the interaction of @layer base with component libraries, appear in migration notes. Prettier and editor plugins mitigate class ordering and discovery.

Capabilities

  • Utility classes for layout, spacing, color and typography
  • Responsive, dark-mode and state variants
  • Build-time scanning that emits only used CSS
  • CSS-based configuration and design tokens (v4)
  • Vite plugin and PostCSS integration
  • Editor IntelliSense extension

Typical workflows

  1. Style a Next.js or Vite application without writing custom CSS files
  2. Define a design system through theme tokens in CSS
  3. Use shadcn/ui components built on Tailwind utilities

Strengths

  • Small production stylesheets
  • Consistent design constraints through tokens
  • MIT license with broad framework support

Limitations

  • Long class strings reduce markup readability
  • Requires a build step
  • Major version migrations change configuration format

Prerequisites

  • Node.js or Bun with Vite, PostCSS or a framework integration

Who it is for

  • Front-end developers
  • Designers working in code
  • Teams using component libraries built on Tailwind

Alternatives & comparison

shadcn/ui is not a substitute but a component layer that depends on Tailwind; plain CSS, CSS Modules or CSS-in-JS libraries are the alternatives at the styling level, trading Tailwind's constraints and tooling for conventional stylesheets.

  • shadcn/ui
