Express
by OpenJS Foundation · Framework · also known as Express.js, ExpressJS
Minimal, unopinionated web framework for Node.js with routing and middleware, the long-standing default for HTTP servers in the Node ecosystem
Overview
Express is a web application framework for Node.js, created by TJ Holowaychuk in 2010 and now maintained under the OpenJS Foundation with an MIT license. It adds a thin layer over Node's HTTP module: a router that matches paths and methods, a middleware pipeline through which every request flows, and helpers for responses, static files, templating and error handling. Almost everything else, from body parsing to authentication, sessions and validation, comes from middleware packages, many of them maintained by the same project.
Because of its age and ubiquity, Express is the framework most tutorials, hosting guides and middleware target, and a great many production services and internal tools run on it, typically under PM2 or in containers behind a reverse proxy. Version 5, released after a long gestation, modernized promise handling in routes and dropped legacy Node versions. Limitations include the absence of built-in TypeScript types (provided by the community), no structured validation or OpenAPI generation without additional libraries, and an architecture tied to Node's request and response objects, which makes it less portable to edge runtimes than Web Standard-based frameworks such as Hono.
Capabilities
- Routing by path and HTTP method
- Middleware pipeline for request processing
- Static file serving and template engine integration
- Error-handling middleware
- Large ecosystem of compatible middleware packages
- Promise-aware route handlers in version 5
Typical workflows
- Build a REST API with JSON middleware and a database client
- Serve a single-page application's static files and API from one process
- Run several Express services under PM2 behind Caddy or nginx
Strengths
- Very large ecosystem and documentation base
- Minimal learning curve
- MIT license under foundation governance
Limitations
- No built-in TypeScript types or validation
- Tied to Node.js HTTP objects; not portable to edge runtimes
- Slow release cadence historically
Prerequisites
- Node.js and npm
Who it is for
- Node.js backend developers
- Teams maintaining existing services
Alternatives & comparison
Hono offers a similar minimal routing-and-middleware model written for Web Standard APIs and TypeScript, which makes it portable across runtimes. FastAPI is the Python counterpart with validation and OpenAPI generation built in. Next.js route handlers replace a standalone Express server when the API lives next to a React front end.
