R
by R Foundation / R Core Team · Language · also known as R Project, GNU R, R language
Language and environment for statistical computing and graphics, with the CRAN package archive and a strong base in academic statistics and econometrics
Overview
R is a programming language and interpreter for statistical computing and graphics, maintained by the R Core Team and supported by the R Foundation. It descends from the S language and is distributed under the GNU GPL. The base distribution includes vectors, data frames, model-fitting functions, random number generation and a graphics system; the Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN) adds thousands of peer-reviewed packages covering econometrics, time series, spatial statistics, bioinformatics and reporting.
R is usually driven from an IDE such as RStudio or Positron, or from literate documents produced with R Markdown and Quarto, which makes it a common choice for reproducible academic papers and teaching material. Package families such as the tidyverse, data.table and fixest shape most contemporary code. Limits include single-threaded execution by default, memory-bound in-memory data frames, and a smaller footprint than Python in general-purpose programming and production web services.
Capabilities
- Vectorized statistical computing and model fitting
- Publication-quality graphics (base, grid, ggplot2)
- CRAN package ecosystem with automated checks
- Literate programming through R Markdown and Quarto
- Interfaces to C, C++ (Rcpp) and Fortran
Typical workflows
- Estimate econometric models and export tables for a paper
- Produce reproducible reports and slides from Quarto documents
- Teach statistics with interactive scripts
Strengths
- Deep statistical and econometric package coverage
- Strong reproducible-research culture
- Free software under the GPL
Limitations
- In-memory data frames limit dataset size
- Single-threaded by default
- Less used for production services and general software
Prerequisites
- R binary from CRAN or a package manager; an IDE such as RStudio or Positron is typical
Who it is for
- Statisticians and econometricians
- Academic researchers and students
- Data analysts producing reports
Alternatives & comparison
Python offers a broader general-purpose ecosystem and dominates machine learning, while R keeps an edge in classical statistics, econometrics packages and literate reporting. Stata and MATLAB are commercial environments with curated documentation and support; R is free and community-maintained, which trades vendor support for breadth and openness.
