MATLAB
by MathWorks · Application · also known as Matlab
MathWorks' commercial numeric computing environment and language for engineers and scientists, with toolboxes, Simulink integration, apps and MATLAB Online
Overview
MATLAB is MathWorks' proprietary programming language and numeric computing environment. It centres on matrix computation, visualization and an interactive desktop with the Live Editor for notebook-style scripts; add-on toolboxes extend it to statistics and machine learning, optimization, signal and image processing, control, computational finance and econometrics, and Simulink provides block-diagram modelling and simulation with code generation. Recent releases (R2026b at the time of writing) add MATLAB Copilot and AI agents, and the environment interoperates with Python, Git and cloud services; MATLAB Online runs in a browser.
Licensing is by intended use (commercial, academic, student, personal) and term (annual or perpetual with maintenance), with campus-wide licences common at universities and quote-based pricing for organizations; a free trial is offered. MATLAB runs on Windows, macOS (including Apple silicon) and Linux. In academic finance and economics it is used for numerical methods and legacy codebases, but its cost and closed ecosystem have pushed much new work toward Python and Julia, and toolboxes are licensed separately.
Editorial note on uncertainty. mathworks.com returns 403 to command-line clients; pages were verified through rendering fetchers. Link checks may report failures that are bot protection rather than outages.

Alternatives & comparison
Python with NumPy/SciPy and Julia offer open-source numerical computing with comparable libraries; Mathematica is the other major proprietary environment, oriented to symbolic computation; R dominates statistics. MATLAB's edge is Simulink and engineering toolboxes.
- Julia
Dynamically typed, JIT-compiled language for numerical and scientific computing that aims to combine high-level syntax with compiled-code speed
Open sourceOpen source - Python
General-purpose, dynamically typed programming language with a large standard library and the dominant ecosystem for data science and machine learning
Open sourceOpen source - R
Language and environment for statistical computing and graphics, with the CRAN package archive and a strong base in academic statistics and econometrics
Open sourceOpen source - SciPy
Core open-source Python library for scientific computing on NumPy arrays: optimization, integration, interpolation, linear algebra, sparse matrices, statistics, signal processing
Open sourceFree - Wolfram Mathematica
Wolfram Research's proprietary technical computing system built on the Wolfram Language, with notebooks, symbolic and numeric computation, visualization, machine learning and curated data
