Salesforce's visual analytics platform: Tableau Desktop authoring (now with a free edition), Tableau Cloud and Server for sharing, and Tableau Next for CRM analytics
Overview
Tableau is a proprietary visual analytics platform owned by Salesforce. Tableau Desktop is the authoring application for macOS and Windows in which analysts connect to files, databases and cloud sources, build drag-and-drop visualizations and combine them into interactive dashboards; the vendor now offers a free Desktop edition for local work alongside licensed versions that publish to a server. Tableau Cloud (hosted) and Tableau Server (self-managed) provide sharing, governance, scheduled extracts, web authoring and Pulse metric digests; Tableau Prep handles data preparation; Tableau Public is a free gallery for publishing public visualizations; and Tableau Next delivers analytics and an agent inside Salesforce's platform and Slack.
Tableau is widely used in business analytics and teaching, with Creator, Explorer and Viewer license roles sold on annual contracts, plus capacity- and compute-based options for Cloud and Server. Its strengths are visual exploration and polished dashboards; costs are a proprietary stack, Windows-leaning server components (Server runs on Windows and Linux, Desktop on macOS and Windows), and a licensing model that favors organizations over individual researchers unless the free edition or Public suffices.
Editorial note on uncertainty. tableau.com blocks automated clients (HTTP 403 to curl); pages were nonetheless loaded today through a browser-like extractor and the recorded URLs are the official canonical pages.
