Observable
by Observable, Inc. · Platform · also known as Observable Framework, Observable Notebooks, Observable Plot, ObservableHQ
JavaScript data notebooks and the open-source Observable Framework static-site generator for data apps, from the maintainers of D3 and Plot
Overview
Observable is a platform and set of open-source tools for working with data in JavaScript, built by Observable, Inc., the company of D3 creator Mike Bostock. Observable notebooks are reactive documents in which cells of JavaScript, Markdown, HTML or SQL re-evaluate when their inputs change, with live inspection of values and a dataflow view; the current generation (Notebooks 2.0) stores notebooks as plain HTML files editable locally, with an open-source Notebook Kit for building static sites and a macOS desktop editor, alongside the cloud workspace that adds real-time collaboration, forking and version history, database connections, an AI agent and team permissions on free, Pro, Team and Enterprise plans.
Observable Framework is the separate open-source (ISC) static-site generator: pages are Markdown with reactive JavaScript and data loaders written in any language (Python, R, SQL, shell) that snapshot data at build time, producing fast dashboards and reports deployable anywhere. Observable Plot and D3 are the company's visualization libraries. The ecosystem is JavaScript-centric, so Python users rely on data loaders rather than kernels, and the hosted notebooks require the Observable service for collaboration features.
Editorial note on uncertainty. observablehq.com rate-limits automated requests (HTTP 429); the recorded pages were loaded today through a browser-like extractor. license_spdx refers to Observable Framework only.
Capabilities
- Reactive JavaScript notebooks with live value inspection
- File-based Notebooks 2.0 with open-source Notebook Kit
- Observable Framework static-site generator with polyglot data loaders
- Observable Plot and D3 visualization libraries
- Collaboration: forking, merging, version history, comments
- Database connections and an AI agent in the hosted workspace
Typical workflows
- Build a data dashboard as a static site with Framework and Python data loaders
- Prototype a D3 or Plot chart interactively in a notebook
- Publish an explorable explanation with live inputs
Strengths
- Reactive model without hidden state
- Framework output is plain static files hostable anywhere
- Direct line to D3 and Plot maintainers
Limitations
- JavaScript-centric; Python runs only in build-time data loaders
- Collaboration features depend on the hosted service
- Smaller community than Jupyter
Prerequisites
- Node.js for Framework and Notebook Kit; a browser and account for the hosted workspace
Who it is for
- Data journalists and visualization developers
- Analysts building dashboards from code
