Overview

Postman is an API development platform from Postman, Inc. that began as a request-building client and grew into a collaborative suite. Users compose requests for HTTP, GraphQL, gRPC, WebSocket and MQTT, organize them into collections with variables and environments, write JavaScript tests and scripts that run before and after requests, and generate documentation and mock servers from the same collections. Collections can be executed from the command line with the Newman or Postman CLI tools inside CI pipelines, and scheduled monitors run them from Postman's cloud.

The product is available as a desktop application for macOS, Windows and Linux and as a web application; workspaces, collections and history synchronize to Postman's cloud by default, which is what enables team collaboration and also what drives privacy-sensitive users toward offline alternatives such as Bruno. Pricing is freemium with per-user team and enterprise tiers. Limitations include the proprietary client, a reliance on cloud sync for collaboration, the growing size of the application, and the fact that collections are stored in Postman's JSON format rather than as plain files designed for Git review.

Capabilities

  • Request building for HTTP, GraphQL, gRPC, WebSocket and MQTT
  • Collections with environments and variables
  • Pre-request and test scripts in JavaScript
  • Mock servers and generated documentation
  • CLI runners for CI integration
  • Scheduled cloud monitors
  • Team workspaces with cloud sync

Typical workflows

  1. Explore and debug a third-party API before writing client code
  2. Run a collection's tests in CI with the Postman CLI
  3. Publish interactive documentation from a collection

Strengths

  • Broad protocol support in one client
  • Mature collaboration features
  • Large catalog of public API collections

Limitations

  • Proprietary client and cloud-centric model
  • Collections are not plain files suited to Git diffs
  • Application has grown heavy

Prerequisites

  • Desktop app or browser; an account for sync and team features

Who it is for

  • API developers and testers
  • Teams documenting and sharing APIs

Alternatives & comparison

Bruno is an open-source desktop client that stores collections as plain-text files in a Git repository and works offline, a direct answer to Postman's cloud sync. Hoppscotch is an open-source, browser-first client that can be self-hosted. Postman remains the most feature-complete of the three, particularly for monitoring and enterprise governance.
