Overview

Hono is a web framework for TypeScript and JavaScript created by Yusuke Wada and maintained by an open-source community under the MIT license. It is written against the Web Standard Request and Response objects rather than a runtime-specific HTTP API, so the same application code runs on Cloudflare Workers, Deno, Bun, Node.js, Vercel, AWS Lambda and other environments through thin adapters. The core has no dependencies and is small enough for edge deployments.

The framework provides routing with typed path parameters, middleware (CORS, JWT, logging, caching and more), JSX for server-rendered HTML, and a typed RPC client that derives request and response types from route definitions. Validation integrates with Zod and other schema libraries, and the OpenAPI extension generates specifications from validated routes. Hono is a common choice for APIs that must be portable across runtimes or deployed at the edge. Its trade-offs are a smaller ecosystem than Express, fewer batteries than full-stack frameworks, and reliance on third-party packages for databases and sessions.

Capabilities

  • Routing on Web Standard Request and Response
  • Adapters for Cloudflare Workers, Deno, Bun, Node.js and serverless platforms
  • Built-in middleware collection
  • Typed RPC client derived from routes
  • JSX server-side rendering
  • Validation and OpenAPI generation through extensions

Typical workflows

  1. Deploy the same API to an edge platform and a Node.js server
  2. Share request and response types between server and client
  3. Serve a small HTML application with JSX and no front-end framework

Strengths

  • Runtime portability
  • Minimal footprint with zero dependencies
  • Strong TypeScript typing end to end

Limitations

  • Smaller ecosystem than Express
  • No bundled database or session layer
  • Edge runtimes impose their own constraints on Node APIs

Prerequisites

  • A JavaScript runtime (Node.js, Bun, Deno) or edge platform

Who it is for

  • TypeScript API developers
  • Teams deploying to edge platforms
  • Developers wanting a light alternative to Express

Alternatives & comparison

Express is the Node.js incumbent with the largest middleware ecosystem but is tied to Node's HTTP model and lacks built-in typing. FastAPI is the Python equivalent, deriving validation and OpenAPI from type hints as Hono does from schemas. Next.js provides route handlers inside a React application rather than a standalone API framework.

  • Express

Minimal, unopinionated web framework for Node.js with routing and middleware, the long-standing default for HTTP servers in the Node ecosystem

  • FastAPI

Python web framework for building HTTP APIs from type-annotated functions, with automatic validation through Pydantic and generated OpenAPI documentation

  • Next.js

React framework from Vercel for full-stack web applications with file-based routing, server components, server-side rendering, static generation and API route handlers
