Overview

The OpenAPI Specification is an open standard for describing HTTP APIs, maintained by the OpenAPI Initiative, a Linux Foundation project. It originated as the Swagger Specification and was donated in 2015 and renamed. An OpenAPI document, in JSON or YAML, declares an API's paths, operations, parameters, request and response bodies, authentication schemes and reusable schema components, with data shapes expressed in a JSON Schema dialect. Version 3.1 aligned the schema language fully with JSON Schema; the Initiative also publishes related specifications such as Arazzo for workflows and Overlay for document modification.

The specification itself is a document licensed under Apache-2.0; its value lies in the ecosystem that consumes it. Frameworks such as FastAPI and Hono generate OpenAPI documents from code, clients like Postman, Bruno and Hoppscotch import them, generators produce typed SDKs and server stubs, and documentation tools render interactive references. AI tooling increasingly uses OpenAPI documents to expose APIs as callable tools. Limitations: the format describes HTTP request-response APIs and does not cover event-driven or streaming protocols (AsyncAPI addresses those), large documents become hard to maintain by hand, and tool support for the newest versions lags the specification.

Capabilities

  • Declarative description of paths, operations and parameters
  • Schema definitions aligned with JSON Schema
  • Security scheme declarations (API keys, OAuth 2, HTTP auth)
  • Reusable components and references across documents
  • Basis for code generation, documentation and testing tools
  • Companion specifications: Arazzo (workflows) and Overlay

Typical workflows

  1. Generate an API description from a FastAPI or Hono application
  2. Produce typed client SDKs from a description
  3. Import a description into an API client to explore endpoints
  4. Expose an API to an LLM agent as structured tools

Strengths

  • Vendor-neutral standard with broad tool support
  • Human- and machine-readable
  • Apache-2.0 licensed specification text

Limitations

  • Covers HTTP request-response APIs only
  • Hand-maintained documents grow unwieldy
  • Tool support for the latest versions can lag

Prerequisites

  • None for the specification; tooling depends on language ecosystem

Who it is for

  • API designers and backend developers
  • Platform teams standardizing API governance
  • Developers integrating third-party APIs

Alternatives & comparison

GraphQL and gRPC define their own schema languages (SDL and Protocol Buffers) and are alternatives at the protocol level rather than competing description formats; AsyncAPI is the sibling specification for event-driven APIs. Within HTTP APIs, OpenAPI has no comparably adopted competitor.
