OpenStreetMap
In-depth entryby OpenStreetMap Foundation · Data service · also known as OSM
Collaboratively edited world map database released under the ODbL, with planet files, an editing API and derived tiles and extracts
Overview
OpenStreetMap is a volunteer-built geographic database of the world, supported by the OpenStreetMap Foundation, and is the primary open data source in the GIS and mapping category. Contributors map roads, buildings, addresses, land use, points of interest and administrative boundaries as nodes, ways and relations with free-form tags; the result is published under the Open Database License, which allows reuse with attribution and share-alike on derived databases.
Data is obtained in several ways: the full planet file and regional extracts (from the Foundation and mirrors such as Geofabrik), the editing API v0.6 for small reads and writes, the Overpass API for filtered queries, and prebuilt products such as raster tiles, vector tiles and routing graphs. Tooling such as osm2pgsql, osmium and GDAL loads extracts into PostGIS or files, and QGIS, GeoPandas and web libraries consume them directly.
For researchers, OSM provides building footprints, street networks and amenities for accessibility, walkability and hedonic studies; for products, it underlies MapLibre and Mapbox base maps and many geocoders. The Foundation publishes usage policies for its public tile and API servers that forbid heavy automated use; production applications should host their own copies or use a commercial provider.
Caveats: completeness and attribute quality vary by region and feature type, tags are community conventions rather than a strict schema, data changes continuously so snapshots must be dated, and the ODbL share-alike clause needs legal consideration when merging OSM with proprietary data.
Capabilities
- Global vector map database of roads, buildings, addresses and POIs
- Planet files and regional extracts for bulk use
- Editing API v0.6 for reads and contributions
- Public raster tile layers under a usage policy
- Rich community documentation of tagging conventions
- Ecosystem of importers, renderers, routers and geocoders
Typical workflows
- Import a provincial extract into PostGIS with osm2pgsql
- Query amenities around properties through Overpass
- Render a custom base map with MapLibre from OSM-derived vector tiles
Strengths
- Free and open under ODbL
- Global coverage with frequent updates
- Very large tool ecosystem
Limitations
- Coverage and attribute quality vary by region
- Public tile and API servers have strict usage policies
- Share-alike license terms affect derived databases
- Continuous change requires dated snapshots
Prerequisites
- Tooling to process extracts (osmium, osm2pgsql, GDAL) for bulk use
Who it is for
- GIS analysts and developers
- Urban and transport researchers
- Map product teams
Alternatives & comparison
Overpass API is a query service over OSM data rather than an alternative dataset. Google Maps Platform and Mapbox are commercial, API-metered services that bundle base maps and geocoding with their own or mixed data; MapLibre is an open rendering library frequently used with OSM-derived tiles.
