Mapbox
by Mapbox, Inc. · Platform · also known as Mapbox GL JS, Mapbox Maps SDK
Commercial mapping platform with vector tiles, map styling, geocoding, directions and SDKs for web, iOS and Android, billed by usage
Overview
Mapbox is a commercial location platform offering hosted vector and raster tiles, a style editor, geocoding and search, directions and matrix routing, and client SDKs for the web (Mapbox GL JS), iOS, Android and Unity. Base maps combine OpenStreetMap and other data sources, and developers can upload their own datasets as tilesets and style them in Mapbox Studio. Access is by API token with usage-based billing per map load or request and a free monthly allowance. Since version 2 the GL JS library is distributed under a proprietary Mapbox licence and requires a Mapbox token, which is why the community fork MapLibre exists. Mapbox suits products that need polished, customisable base maps and routing without running tile infrastructure; costs scale with traffic and the terms restrict caching and offline use.
Capabilities
- Hosted vector and satellite tiles with custom styles
- Mapbox GL JS and native SDKs for web and mobile
- Geocoding, search and address autofill
- Directions, matrix and map-matching APIs
- Tileset uploads and processing for custom data
- Mapbox Studio style editor
Typical workflows
- Publish a styled map of listings with client-side clustering
- Geocode addresses and compute travel-time matrices
Strengths
- Complete stack from data to rendering
- High-quality rendering and styling tools
Limitations
- Usage-based billing grows with traffic
- GL JS v2+ is proprietary and token-locked
- Terms restrict caching and offline storage of tiles
Prerequisites
- Mapbox account and access token
Who it is for
- Web and mobile developers
- Product teams needing custom base maps
Alternatives & comparison
MapLibre is the open-source fork of Mapbox GL JS v1 and works with any tile source; Google Maps Platform is the main commercial competitor with different data and pricing structure. Leaflet is a lightweight open-source raster-first library without a hosted backend.
