Google Maps Platform
by Google (Chrome DevTools team) · API service · also known as Google Maps API, Maps JavaScript API, Places API, Geocoding API
Google's commercial suite of mapping APIs: maps and Street View embedding, Places, Geocoding, Routes and Distance Matrix, billed per request
Overview
Google Maps Platform is Google's set of location APIs and SDKs for developers, managed through Google Cloud projects and API keys. It covers embeddable maps for web, iOS and Android, Street View imagery, Places search and details, geocoding and reverse geocoding, address validation, routing with traffic, distance matrices and environmental APIs. Billing is per request with monthly usage credits, and the terms of service restrict storing geocoding results, using data outside Google maps and bulk download. It is widely used when applications need Google's place database and routing quality, and it integrates with other Google Cloud services. For research pipelines the main constraints are cost at scale, licensing limits on caching and redistribution, and the closed nature of the underlying data.
Capabilities
- Maps JavaScript API and mobile SDKs for interactive maps
- Places API for POI search, details and autocomplete
- Geocoding, reverse geocoding and address validation
- Routes, Directions and Distance Matrix with traffic
- Street View and aerial imagery
- Usage dashboards and quotas in Google Cloud Console
Typical workflows
- Geocode a list of property addresses and store coordinates under the permitted terms
- Compute drive-time matrices between listings and employment centres
Strengths
- Extensive place and road data with traffic
- Mature SDKs and documentation
Limitations
- Per-request billing can be significant at scale
- Terms restrict caching, storage and non-Google-map display of results
- Closed data; no self-hosting
Prerequisites
- Google Cloud project with billing enabled and API key
Who it is for
- Web and mobile developers
- Analysts needing geocoding and travel-time data
Alternatives & comparison
Mapbox offers a comparable commercial stack with different data sources and more styling control; Geocodio focuses on US and Canadian geocoding with permissive storage terms. OpenStreetMap with MapLibre gives an open, self-hostable alternative without Places or traffic routing.
- Geocodio
Geocoding API and spreadsheet service for the US and Canada with batch processing and data appends such as census, districts and time zones
ProprietaryFreemium - Leaflet
