Geocodio
by Dotsquare LLC (Geocodio) · API service · also known as Geocod.io
Geocoding API and spreadsheet service for the US and Canada with batch processing and data appends such as census, districts and time zones
Overview
Geocodio is a geocoding service from Dotsquare LLC covering the United States and Canada, with forward and reverse geocoding available by REST API or by uploading spreadsheets through the web interface. Batch endpoints accept large lists in one request, asynchronous list jobs handle CSV and Excel files, and optional field appends attach census geographies and ACS demographics, congressional and state legislative districts, school districts, Canadian federal ridings, time zones and ZIP+4 data to each result. Official client libraries exist for Python, Node.js, Ruby and PHP, and the terms permit storing and reusing results, which matters for research datasets. Pricing is usage-based with a free daily allowance and an unlimited-plan option. Coverage is limited to two countries plus some newer additions, Canadian results return only the forward sortation area of the postal code, and accuracy depends on the underlying public address data.
Capabilities
- Forward and reverse geocoding for the US and Canada
- Batch requests and asynchronous spreadsheet list jobs
- Data appends: census, ACS, districts, time zones, ZIP+4, ridings
- Distance and matrix calculations
- Official client libraries for Python, Node.js, Ruby and PHP
- Web upload interface for non-programmers
Typical workflows
- Geocode an assessment roll export and append census tracts
- Reverse-geocode listing coordinates to standardised addresses
Strengths
- Results may be stored and reused under the terms
- Simple pricing and spreadsheet upload path
Limitations
- US and Canada focus; limited international coverage
- Canadian postal codes resolved only to the FSA level
- Accuracy bounded by public address datasets
Prerequisites
- Geocodio account and API key
Who it is for
- Researchers geocoding address lists
- Developers needing North American geocoding
Alternatives & comparison
Google Maps Platform and Mapbox geocode worldwide but restrict storage of results; Geocodio allows retention and adds census and district appends. OpenStreetMap-based Nominatim is free and self-hostable but less accurate on rooftop-level US and Canadian addresses.
- Google Maps Platform
