Overview

GitHub Actions is the continuous-integration and automation service built into GitHub. Workflows are YAML files stored under .github/workflows that run jobs when events occur, such as a push, a pull request, a schedule or a manual trigger. Jobs execute on GitHub-hosted runners (Linux, Windows and macOS images, including Apple Silicon) or on self-hosted runners that organizations register on their own machines, which allows builds to use local hardware, private networks or GPUs.

Reusable steps come from a marketplace of actions published as repositories, and workflows can call other workflows, use matrices to fan out across versions and platforms, cache dependencies and publish artifacts and releases. Secrets and OpenID Connect tokens handle credentials for deployments. Public repositories receive hosted runner time at no charge; private repositories have included quotas and metered usage beyond them, as described on the billing page. Because the workflow syntax has become a de facto standard, Gitea and Forgejo implement compatible runners. The service's limits include lock-in to GitHub as the event source, debugging that often requires repeated pushes, and hosted macOS minutes that are billed at a higher multiplier than Linux.

Editorial note on uncertainty. Runner software is open source but the orchestration service is proprietary; self_hostable refers to the service, not the runners.

Capabilities

  • Event-triggered YAML workflows
  • Hosted runners for Linux, Windows and macOS
  • Self-hosted runners on your own hardware
  • Marketplace of reusable actions
  • Matrix builds, caching and artifacts
  • Secrets and OIDC for cloud deployments

Typical workflows

  1. Run tests on every pull request across several language versions
  2. Build and publish a container image on tag
  3. Deploy to a server through SSH or a cloud provider using OIDC
  4. Run jobs on an Apple Silicon self-hosted runner

Strengths

  • No separate CI service to operate
  • Large ecosystem of reusable actions
  • Self-hosted runners extend to private infrastructure

Limitations

  • Tied to GitHub as the host
  • Local debugging of workflows is awkward
  • Hosted minutes are metered on private repositories

Prerequisites

  • A GitHub repository

Who it is for

  • Teams hosting code on GitHub
  • Open-source maintainers
  • Platform engineers managing runners

Alternatives & comparison

GitLab CI is the integrated equivalent on GitLab with its own pipeline syntax and runners. Gitea Actions and Forgejo Actions reuse the GitHub Actions workflow format and many marketplace actions, which makes them the closest self-hosted substitutes, though compatibility is not complete.
