Overview

TestFlight is Apple's beta-testing service for apps, games and App Clips on its platforms. Developers upload builds from Xcode to App Store Connect, enable them in the app's TestFlight tab and distribute them either to internal testers (members of the development team) or to external testers invited by email or through a public link. Testers install the TestFlight app, receive builds and send back feedback that can include screenshots, comments and crash reports, which the developer reviews in App Store Connect.

Builds for external groups go through a Beta App Review before the first distribution, and the service imposes limits on the number of testers and on how long a build remains installable. Groups let a team run several test tracks at once, for example one per platform or feature. When testing is done the same build is submitted for App Store review.

TestFlight is included with the Apple Developer Program and has no separate pricing. It is Apple-only: Android or web builds cannot be distributed through it, and it is not a general CI/CD or crash-reporting platform, so teams often pair it with Xcode Cloud or another CI system and an analytics service.

Capabilities

  • Distribution of beta builds to internal team members
  • External tester groups via email invitation or public link
  • Tester feedback with screenshots and crash reports
  • Multiple concurrent builds and groups
  • Integration with App Store Connect submission flow

Typical workflows

  1. Archive in Xcode, upload, and push a build to internal testers automatically
  2. Invite outside testers with a public link after Beta App Review
  3. Collect crash reports before submitting to the App Store

Strengths

  • Built into the Apple developer workflow at no extra cost
  • Over-the-air installs without device provisioning profiles
  • Feedback and crashes land directly in App Store Connect

Limitations

  • Apple platforms only
  • Tester counts and build lifetime are capped
  • External builds require Beta App Review
  • Not a substitute for CI or detailed analytics

Prerequisites

  • Apple Developer Program membership
  • Xcode and App Store Connect access

Who it is for

  • iOS and macOS development teams
  • Indie developers running public betas
