GitLab
by GitLab Inc. · Platform · also known as GitLab CE, GitLab EE, GitLab.com
Open-core DevSecOps platform combining Git hosting, merge requests, integrated CI/CD pipelines, registry and security scanning, available as SaaS or self-managed
Overview
GitLab is a DevSecOps platform developed by GitLab Inc. that bundles Git repository hosting, merge requests, issue tracking, a container and package registry, and a CI/CD system defined in a .gitlab-ci.yml file into a single application. It is offered as a hosted service (GitLab.com), as a dedicated single-tenant cloud, and as self-managed software installed on an organization's own servers.
The code is open core: the Community Edition is MIT-licensed, while features in the ee/ directory are under a proprietary license and unlocked by Premium and Ultimate subscriptions. The free tier covers the essentials for small teams; higher tiers add compliance, security scanning, planning and AI features. GitLab is frequently chosen by organizations that want the entire toolchain self-hosted with CI included, rather than assembling a forge and a separate CI service. Its main drawbacks are the resource requirements of a self-managed instance, which is substantially heavier than Gitea or Forgejo, and the breadth of configuration that comes with a platform of this size.
Capabilities
- Git hosting with merge requests and approvals
- Integrated CI/CD pipelines with runners
- Container and package registry
- Issue tracking, epics and boards
- Security scanning (SAST, dependency, container)
- Self-managed and SaaS deployment options
Typical workflows
- Run build, test and deploy stages from one pipeline file
- Self-host the full platform behind a corporate network
- Review code with approval rules and protected branches
Strengths
- CI/CD built in rather than added
- Self-managed edition with open-source core
- Single application for the full lifecycle
Limitations
- Self-managed instances need substantial resources
- Many features reserved for paid tiers
- Large configuration surface
Prerequisites
- GitLab.com account, or a Linux server for self-managed installation
Who it is for
- Engineering organizations wanting an integrated DevOps platform
- Teams required to self-host
- Regulated industries
Alternatives & comparison
GitHub has the larger community and ecosystem but is proprietary with self-hosting only at the enterprise level; GitLab's self-managed edition is available to everyone. Gitea and Forgejo are much lighter forges with Actions-compatible CI, suited to small teams and modest hardware, whereas GitLab targets the full enterprise toolchain.
- Forgejo
Community-governed self-hosted Git forge forked from Gitea, stewarded by Codeberg e.V., with pull requests, issues, packages and Forgejo Actions
Open sourceOpen source - Git
Distributed version control system that records snapshots of a project's history locally and synchronizes them with remotes such as GitHub, GitLab or a bare repository over SSH
Open sourceOpen source - Gitea
Lightweight self-hosted Git forge written in Go with repositories, pull requests, issues, packages and GitHub-compatible Actions, deployable as a single binary
Open sourceOpen source - GitHub
Microsoft-owned code hosting platform for Git repositories with pull requests, issues, Actions CI/CD, package registry, Copilot and the largest open-source community
ProprietaryFreemium - GitHub Actions
GitHub's CI/CD and automation service that runs YAML-defined workflows on hosted or self-hosted runners in response to repository events
