Overview

Eurostat is the statistical office of the European Union, part of the European Commission, and the reference source for harmonised statistics on EU and EFTA countries and their regions. Its database covers national accounts, prices, labour, population, housing, energy, environment and regional indicators at NUTS levels, with long time series and common definitions across countries. Data is explored in the Data Browser and retrieved programmatically through the API, which serves datasets in SDMX 2.1 and 3.0 as well as JSON-stat, alongside bulk download facilities and catalogue metadata; packages such as eurostat for Python and R wrap these endpoints. Reuse is permitted under the Commission's reuse policy with attribution. Dataset codes and dimension structures take time to learn, large extractions must be chunked within API limits, and coverage is confined to Europe.

Capabilities

  • Harmonised EU and member-state statistics including regional NUTS data
  • Data Browser for interactive exploration and export
  • SDMX 2.1/3.0 and JSON-stat API access
  • Bulk download facility and metadata catalogue
  • Wrappers for Python and R

Typical workflows

  1. Pull harmonised house price indices for several countries into one frame
  2. Download regional GDP by NUTS 2 for a spatial model

Strengths

  • Cross-country comparability by design
  • Open reuse policy
  • Standards-based APIs

Limitations

  • Europe-only coverage
  • Dataset and dimension codes have a learning curve
  • API response size limits require chunked queries

Prerequisites

  • HTTP client or wrapper package

Who it is for

  • Economists studying Europe
  • Policy analysts
  • Students
