Free, open-source reference manager with browser connectors, word-processor plugins, a PDF reader, group libraries and optional paid file storage
Overview
Zotero is a free, open-source reference manager developed by the non-profit Corporation for Digital Scholarship. The desktop application runs on macOS, Windows and Linux and stores a local library of bibliographic items, attached PDFs, notes and tags; companion apps exist for iOS and Android. The Zotero Connector browser extension captures references and full texts from publisher pages, catalogs and databases with one click, and word-processor plugins insert citations and bibliographies in Microsoft Word, LibreOffice and Google Docs using thousands of CSL styles.
Version 7 and later include a built-in PDF and EPUB reader with highlighting and annotation that flows into notes, duplicate detection, RSS feeds, related items, and a plugin system; the third-party Better BibTeX plugin is widely used by LaTeX authors to maintain stable citation keys and auto-exported .bib files. Libraries sync through Zotero's servers, where metadata sync is free and attachment storage above a basic allowance is sold as yearly individual, lab and institutional subscriptions that fund development; file sync can alternatively point to a user's own WebDAV server. Group libraries support shared collections for teams and classes, and a documented web API allows scripted access.
Zotero is licensed under the AGPL-3.0, and the client, connector and web library are all developed in the open. Practical limits include the lack of a native full-text search across remote storage, the dependence on site translators that occasionally break when publishers redesign pages, and the need for a storage plan or WebDAV setup when syncing many PDFs.
Editorial note on uncertainty. self_hostable refers to the open-source client with WebDAV file sync and the open-source dataserver; the hosted sync service is operated by Zotero.
