Overview

biblatex is a LaTeX package that replaces the classic BibTeX styling model: bibliography and citation formatting are defined entirely in LaTeX macros, so new styles can be written by anyone who knows LaTeX, and dozens of styles (authoryear, numeric, APA, Chicago and others) are distributed on CTAN. Bibliographic data is processed by the Biber backend, which adds full Unicode support, customizable sorting based on the Unicode Collation Algorithm, validation of data, remote data sources and a flexible data model; legacy BibTeX backends are supported with reduced functionality.

The package handles multiple bibliographies and reference lists with different sorting in one document, filtered and subdivided bibliographies, and automatic language switching through babel or polyglossia. It is maintained by Philip Kime (Philipp Lehman is the original author), released under the LaTeX Project Public License 1.3 or later, and ships with TeX Live and MiKTeX. Journals that still require BibTeX-compatible .bbl files cannot accept biblatex output directly, which remains the main practical obstacle for submissions.

Capabilities

  • Bibliography styling defined in LaTeX macros
  • Biber backend with Unicode and UCA sorting
  • Multiple and filtered bibliographies in one document
  • Localization via babel/polyglossia
  • Data validation and remote data sources
  • Large library of contributed citation styles

Typical workflows

  1. Author-year citations in a thesis with per-chapter bibliographies
  2. Multilingual bibliographies with correct sorting

Strengths

  • Styles are editable LaTeX rather than .bst stack language
  • Full Unicode support through Biber

Limitations

  • Some journals require classic BibTeX .bbl files
  • Biber must be run as a separate step

Prerequisites

  • A TeX distribution with Biber installed

Who it is for

  • LaTeX authors
  • Style designers for publishers and institutions
