Overview

JabRef is a free, open-source desktop reference manager whose native storage is a plain BibTeX or biblatex file, which makes it a natural fit for LaTeX authors and for version-controlled projects. It fetches metadata by DOI, ISBN, arXiv ID or PubMed ID, searches online catalogs such as Crossref, Google Scholar and arXiv, imports more than a dozen formats, extracts metadata from PDFs, and offers a browser extension for one-click imports.

Organization features include hierarchical groups, advanced search, duplicate detection, customizable citation keys, rule-based renaming and filing of attached PDFs, and quality checks against online catalogs. Citation keys can be pushed to editors such as TeXstudio, Emacs, Vim and LyX, and plugins insert citations in LibreOffice and Word; teams can share a library through an SQL database. JabRef is written in Java and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux under the MIT license, maintained by volunteers organized in JabRef e.V.

It has no hosted sync service of its own, its interface is denser than consumer tools, and workflows outside BibTeX are less polished than in Zotero or Mendeley.
