Gemini API
by Google (Chrome DevTools team) · API service · also known as Google AI Studio API, Google Gen AI SDK, Google AI for Developers
Google's developer API for the Gemini model family, keyed from Google AI Studio, with function calling, Search grounding, Live API, image and video generation and a free tier
Overview
The Gemini API is Google's developer-facing interface to its Gemini models, obtained through Google AI Studio, where keys are created and prompts prototyped. In 2026 the documentation moved from ai.google.dev/gemini-api to aistudio.google.com/docs. The API exposes text and reasoning models in Pro, Flash and Flash-Lite variants, a Live API for real-time audio and video sessions, text-to-speech, image generation and editing, video and music generation, embeddings, and document understanding for PDFs. Supporting features include function calling, grounding with Google Search and URL context, code execution, structured outputs from JSON Schema, Pydantic or Zod, long context with context caching, file uploads and batch processing. The docs describe the Interactions API as the default interface, with generateContent kept as a legacy path.
The Google Gen AI SDK is offered for Python, JavaScript, Go and Java, alongside REST. Pricing is tiered: a free tier with rate limits whose content may be used to improve Google products, a paid tier with higher limits, caching and batch processing where content is generally not used for training, and an enterprise route through Vertex AI. Users should check the data-use terms per tier, and note that some newer models and modalities are paid-only.
Capabilities
- Text, reasoning and multimodal generation across Pro, Flash and Flash-Lite models
- Function calling, Search grounding, URL context and code execution
- Live API for real-time audio and video agents
- Image, video, music and speech generation plus embeddings
- Structured outputs, context caching, files and batch processing
- Google Gen AI SDK for Python, JavaScript, Go and Java
Typical workflows
- Prototype in AI Studio, then export code against the same key
- Ground answers in live web results with Search grounding
- Process long PDFs with context caching to reduce repeated cost
Strengths
- Free tier for experimentation
- Long context windows and native multimodal inputs
- Same models available through Vertex AI for enterprise controls
Limitations
- Free-tier content may be used to improve Google products
- Several modalities and newest models are paid-only
- Documentation URLs changed in 2026; older links redirect
Prerequisites
- Google account and an AI Studio API key
- Gen AI SDK or any HTTP client
Who it is for
- Developers building multimodal applications
- Teams needing a free tier for prototypes
- Google Cloud customers moving to Vertex AI
