ComfyUI
by Comfy Org · Application · also known as Comfy, Comfy Desktop, Comfy Org
Open-source node-based interface and inference engine for diffusion and other generative models (image, video, audio, 3D), runnable locally with desktop apps or as a hosted cloud
Overview
ComfyUI is a GPL-3.0 node-based application and backend for generative media. Users build workflows by wiring nodes (model loaders, samplers, conditioning, upscalers, custom operations) on a canvas, and the engine executes the graph on local hardware; the same graph is a JSON file that can be shared, versioned or called through an API. It supports image, video, audio and 3D generation across many open-weight model families, with a registry for community custom nodes. The repository moved from the original author's account to the Comfy-Org organization, which now maintains the project.
Comfy Org distributes Comfy Desktop for Windows, macOS and Linux alongside manual and portable installs, and offers Comfy Cloud for GPU execution without local hardware, Partner Nodes and Comfy Router for calling third-party commercial models, a Developer Platform that exposes workflows as production APIs and an Enterprise tier. A Comfy Agent builds workflows from text descriptions. ComfyUI is the standard tool for reproducible, fine-grained control over diffusion pipelines; the learning curve is steep, custom nodes vary in quality and security, and local use requires a capable GPU (Apple Silicon works through PyTorch's MPS backend with lower throughput).
Editorial note on uncertainty. The LICENSE file is GPL-3.0; the SPDX identifier is given as GPL-3.0-only since no 'or later' clause was verified.
Capabilities
- Node graph editor for generative pipelines
- Image, video, audio and 3D model support
- Workflows as shareable JSON with API execution
- Custom-node registry and Comfy CLI
- Desktop apps for Windows, macOS and Linux
- Comfy Cloud, Partner Nodes, Developer Platform and Enterprise offerings
Typical workflows
- Build an image-generation pipeline with ControlNet and upscaling
- Export a workflow and run it as an API endpoint
- Run a heavy video model on Comfy Cloud when local VRAM is insufficient
Strengths
- Transparent, reproducible pipelines
- Fast adoption of new open models
- GPL-licensed core with a large community
Limitations
- Steep learning curve
- Custom nodes vary in quality and security
- Demanding GPU requirements for local use
Prerequisites
- GPU with sufficient VRAM (NVIDIA preferred; Apple Silicon supported via MPS)
- Python environment or the desktop installer
Who it is for
- Artists and designers using diffusion models
- Researchers prototyping generative pipelines
- Developers productizing workflows as APIs
