SSRN
by Elsevier · Platform · also known as Social Science Research Network
Elsevier-owned preprint and working-paper platform with discipline networks, author pages, download rankings and institutional research paper series, free to post and read
Overview
SSRN (originally the Social Science Research Network) is a preprint repository owned by Elsevier where scholars post working papers and other early-stage research. It is organized into discipline networks (economics, finance, law, political science, medicine, computer science and others) and subject-matter eJournals, with author pages, download and citation counts, rankings of authors and institutions, e-mail alerts and conference and institutional research paper series. Posting and downloading are free; institutions pay for branded research paper series and related services, and some journals run early-view partnerships through the platform.
In economics and finance SSRN is the default venue for circulating working papers and for establishing priority before journal publication, and its download statistics are widely watched. Papers undergo a light classification review rather than peer review, versions can be replaced by the author, and the site's heavy use of bot protection means it cannot be harvested programmatically and offers no public API, which makes OpenAlex or RePEc the better sources for bibliometric work on the same papers.
Editorial note on uncertainty. ssrn.com returns 403 to command-line clients and standard fetchers; the homepage was read through an extraction service. Fee details for institutional services are not published on the pages checked, so pricing_url is omitted.
