arXiv
by arXiv (independent non-profit, formerly hosted by Cornell University) · Platform · also known as arXiv.org
Free, moderated open-access preprint server for physics, mathematics, computer science, statistics, quantitative finance, economics and related fields, with an open API and bulk access
Overview
arXiv is the open-access preprint repository founded by Paul Ginsparg in 1991, long hosted at Cornell University and now operated as an independent non-profit funded by Simons Foundation International, member institutions and donors. It accepts submissions in physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, quantitative finance, statistics, electrical engineering and systems science, and economics. Submissions are free, pass a moderation check for scope and scholarly form rather than peer review, require endorsement for new authors in a category, and are announced on a daily schedule with persistent identifiers and versioning. Authors choose from a set of distribution licences, including Creative Commons options and arXiv's non-exclusive licence.
Programmatic access includes a legacy query API returning Atom feeds, OAI-PMH metadata harvesting, RSS and bulk full-text downloads from requester-pays S3 buckets; metadata are released under CC0, while redistribution of the e-prints themselves depends on each paper's licence. The API terms of use ask clients to make no more than one request every three seconds on a single connection and not to circumvent limits with multiple machines. For economists, arXiv's econ and q-fin categories coexist with SSRN and RePEc rather than replacing them, and the absence of download metrics and the moderation delays are the usual complaints.
Editorial note on uncertainty. source_model 'open-source' refers to the arXiv NG software being developed openly; no SPDX identifier is recorded for the service.
Capabilities
- Free submission with moderation and endorsement
- Versioned preprints with persistent identifiers
- Daily listings and e-mail/RSS alerts
- Query API with Atom responses
- OAI-PMH harvesting and CC0 metadata
- Bulk full-text access via requester-pays S3
- Author-selected distribution licences
Typical workflows
- Posting a working paper to econ.EM or q-fin for priority
- Harvesting metadata for a bibliometric study via OAI-PMH
- Building a literature feed from the query API
Strengths
- Free, non-profit and open-access
- Open metadata under CC0 and documented APIs
- Long-term preservation and stable identifiers
Limitations
- Rate limit of roughly one request every three seconds
- E-print redistribution depends on each licence
- No download or citation metrics
- Moderation can delay announcement
Prerequisites
- Account and endorsement for first submission in a category
Who it is for
- Researchers in the quantitative sciences and economics
- Developers of literature tools
- Scientometricians
Alternatives & comparison
SSRN is the commercial preprint venue dominant in economics, finance and law with download metrics but no API; RePEc indexes economics working papers from institutional archives; OSF and Zenodo are general repositories with DOIs. arXiv combines non-profit governance with open data access.
- OSF (Open Science Framework)
Free, open-source research management platform from the Center for Open Science for projects, preregistrations, registries, preprint services and linking outputs across storage providers
Open sourceFree - RePEc
Volunteer-run decentralized bibliographic database of economics research, fed by institutional archives and served through IDEAS, EconPapers, the Author Service, CitEc, NEP and MPRA
MixedFree - Semantic Scholar
Free AI-assisted literature search from Ai2 with an Academic Graph API, recommendations and downloadable datasets of papers, authors and citations
ProprietaryFree - SSRN
Elsevier-owned preprint and working-paper platform with discipline networks, author pages, download rankings and institutional research paper series, free to post and read
ProprietaryFree - Zenodo
Free general-purpose research repository operated by CERN that assigns DOIs to datasets, software, papers and other outputs, with a REST API, OAI-PMH, GitHub release archiving and CC0 metadata
