Overview

CrewAI is an MIT-licensed Python framework for orchestrating multiple LLM agents that collaborate on tasks. Agents are defined with roles, goals, tools, memory and knowledge sources; tasks are grouped into crews that run sequentially, hierarchically or in a hybrid process with guardrails, callbacks and human-in-the-loop triggers; and Flows add deterministic start, listen and router steps with persisted state so long-running workflows can resume. Structured outputs use Pydantic, and a CLI scaffolds projects. Integration tools let crews call existing automations or Amazon Bedrock Agents.

The company sells an enterprise console that deploys automations to CrewAI's cloud, a customer VPC or on-premises infrastructure, manages environments, monitors live runs, connects triggers from Gmail, Slack, Salesforce and other systems, and adds RBAC, SSO and PII redaction. A free Basic plan includes a visual editor with limited monthly executions; everything else is custom-priced Enterprise. CrewAI suits business-process automations where the mental model of a team with roles is natural; for fine-grained control over state and branching, graph-based frameworks are more explicit, and the framework's abstractions can hide prompt details that matter for reliability.

Capabilities

  • Role-based agents with tools, memory and knowledge
  • Crews with sequential, hierarchical or hybrid processes
  • Flows with routers, persisted state and resumable execution
  • Guardrails, callbacks and human-in-the-loop triggers
  • CLI scaffolding and Pydantic structured outputs
  • Enterprise console for deployment, monitoring, triggers and governance

Typical workflows

  1. Model a research-and-writing pipeline as a crew of specialist agents
  2. Trigger a flow from an incoming email and route exceptions to a human
  3. Deploy a crew to a VPC from the enterprise console

Strengths

  • Intuitive team-and-roles abstraction
  • MIT-licensed core with commercial deployment option
  • Built-in enterprise connectors and governance

Limitations

  • Abstractions can obscure prompts and control flow
  • Enterprise features are proprietary and custom-priced
  • Python only

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10+ and uv or pip
  • API key for a model provider

Who it is for

  • Teams automating business processes with agents
  • Developers prototyping multi-agent collaborations
