Overview

Rust is a compiled, statically typed systems programming language developed by the Rust Project and supported by the Rust Foundation. Its ownership and borrowing rules let the compiler guarantee memory and thread safety without a garbage collector, which makes it suitable for performance-sensitive code such as runtimes, command-line tools, databases and native extensions for Python or JavaScript.

The toolchain is managed by rustup and centers on Cargo, which handles building, dependency resolution against the crates.io registry, testing, benchmarking and documentation. Rust compiles to native code and WebAssembly. Many of the tools in this encyclopedia are written in it, including uv, Ruff, Zed, Deno's core, Biome, Starship and Turborepo.

Caveats: the learning curve is steep because the borrow checker rejects patterns that other languages allow; compile times grow with project size and generic-heavy dependencies; and the ecosystem for GUI applications and some scientific domains is thinner than in C++ or Python.

Capabilities

  • Compile-time memory and thread safety through ownership
  • Cargo build system and crates.io package registry
  • Zero-cost abstractions and generics
  • Native and WebAssembly compilation targets
  • Integrated testing, benchmarking and documentation tooling
  • Foreign function interface with C

Typical workflows

  1. Write a performance-critical extension for a Python package with PyO3
  2. Build a cross-platform CLI distributed as a single binary
  3. Compile a library to WebAssembly for the browser

Strengths

  • Memory safety without garbage collection
  • Strong tooling with Cargo and rustup
  • Dual MIT/Apache-2.0 license

Limitations

  • Steep learning curve
  • Long compile times on large projects
  • Smaller ecosystem for GUIs and some scientific domains

Prerequisites

  • rustup toolchain installer

Who it is for

  • Systems and infrastructure developers
  • Developers of CLI tools and runtimes
  • Python or JavaScript developers writing native extensions

Alternatives & comparison

Go also produces static binaries but uses a garbage collector and a simpler type system, trading some control for faster compiles and easier onboarding. Swift offers comparable safety with ARC memory management and is the natural choice on Apple platforms. Julia targets numerical computing with a REPL workflow rather than systems programming.
