Overview

Prefect is an open-source workflow orchestration framework from Prefect Technologies, released under Apache 2.0. Developers wrap ordinary Python functions with flow and task decorators; Prefect then records runs, handles retries, caching, concurrency limits and timeouts, and schedules deployments through work pools that run on local processes, Docker, Kubernetes or serverless infrastructure. Flows can be executed directly as scripts during development and promoted to scheduled deployments without rewriting, and the API server with its UI can be self-hosted or replaced by Prefect Cloud, which adds managed scheduling, automations, role-based access and a free tier.

Prefect 3 emphasizes a lighter runtime, events and automations, and transactional semantics for task groups. The framework is appealing to Python-centric teams who want orchestration without a DAG DSL, and it integrates with dbt, Snowflake, AWS, GCP and Azure through collections. Its asset and lineage features are less developed than Dagster's, and the richest operational features are part of the commercial cloud.

Capabilities

  • Flows and tasks as decorated Python functions
  • Retries, caching, timeouts and concurrency limits
  • Deployments, schedules and work pools (process, Docker, Kubernetes, serverless)
  • Events and automations
  • Self-hosted server and UI or Prefect Cloud
  • Integration collections for dbt, clouds and databases

Typical workflows

  1. Turn an existing Python ETL script into a monitored scheduled flow
  2. Run jobs on Kubernetes via work pools
  3. Notify on failures with automations

Strengths

  • Minimal changes to plain Python code
  • Easy local-to-production path
  • Apache 2.0 with a free hosted tier

Limitations

  • Lineage and asset catalog weaker than Dagster
  • Advanced governance features in Prefect Cloud
  • Server requires a database for self-hosting at scale

Prerequisites

  • Python environment; optional Prefect Cloud account

Who it is for

  • Python developers and data engineers
  • ML teams scheduling training jobs
