Pinecone
by Pinecone Systems, Inc. · API service
Fully managed, proprietary vector database service with serverless indexes, namespaces, metadata filtering and integrated embedding and reranking
Overview
Pinecone is a proprietary, fully managed vector database offered as a cloud service by Pinecone Systems. Users create indexes, upsert vectors with metadata into namespaces, and query by vector or, with integrated inference, by text that Pinecone embeds and reranks using hosted models. Serverless indexes separate storage from compute and bill on reads, writes and storage; dedicated pod-based capacity remains for predictable workloads. Sparse vectors enable hybrid lexical and semantic search, and the Assistant product wraps document ingestion and RAG behind a chat API.
SDKs cover Python, Node.js, Java, Go and .NET alongside a REST API, and integrations exist for LangChain, LlamaIndex and the major cloud marketplaces. There is no self-hosted or open-source edition, so Pinecone suits teams who prefer not to operate a vector engine and accept vendor dependence; data location is determined by the chosen cloud region of the index.
Capabilities
- Serverless and pod-based vector indexes
- Namespaces and metadata filtering
- Integrated embedding and reranking models
- Sparse-dense hybrid search
- Assistant API for managed RAG
- SDKs for Python, Node.js, Java, Go and .NET
Typical workflows
- Hosted vector store for a production RAG service
- Semantic search without managing infrastructure
Strengths
- No infrastructure to operate
- Serverless scaling and free starter tier
- Integrated inference removes separate embedding calls
Limitations
- Proprietary and cloud-only; no self-hosting
- Vendor lock-in of index formats and APIs
- Costs scale with usage and are harder to predict offline
Prerequisites
- A Pinecone account and API key
Who it is for
- Teams shipping RAG features without database operations
