Lightweight Python library for declaring and validating DataFrame schemas for pandas, Polars, PySpark and other backends, with type-hint style models
Overview
Pandera is an MIT-licensed Python library for validating DataFrame-like objects. A schema declares column names, dtypes, nullability, uniqueness and checks (ranges, sets, regexes, custom functions, hypothesis tests), either as a DataFrameSchema object or as a class-based DataFrameModel using type annotations in the style of Pydantic. Validation runs eagerly or lazily (collecting all errors), can coerce types, and decorators such as check_input and check_output validate function arguments and returns, turning schemas into executable documentation for pipeline steps. Backends cover pandas, Polars, PySpark, Dask, Modin, GeoPandas and PyArrow tables, and schemas can be inferred from data or exported to YAML and Python scripts.
The project was created by Niels Bantilan and is maintained under the Union.ai open-source organization. Pandera is the natural choice when validation belongs inside Python code next to the DataFrames being transformed; it has no reporting UI or data-docs layer like Great Expectations, and SQL tables must be loaded into a supported DataFrame before validation.
Capabilities
- DataFrameSchema and class-based DataFrameModel definitions
- Column dtype, nullability, uniqueness and custom checks
- Lazy validation collecting all failures
- Decorators validating function inputs and outputs
- Backends for pandas, Polars, PySpark, Dask, Modin, GeoPandas and PyArrow
- Schema inference and YAML export
Typical workflows
- Validate inputs and outputs of each step in a pandas or Polars pipeline
- Document dataset contracts as typed models
- Generate synthetic test data from schemas with Hypothesis
Strengths
- Minimal setup inside existing Python code
- Supports multiple DataFrame libraries
- MIT license
Limitations
- No reporting UI or hosted service
- SQL sources must be loaded into DataFrames first
- Smaller ecosystem than Great Expectations
Prerequisites
- Python with pandas, Polars or another supported DataFrame library
Who it is for
- Data scientists and engineers writing Python pipelines
Alternatives & comparison
- Great Expectations (GX Core)
Python data-quality framework that declares Expectations about datasets, validates them against pandas, Spark or SQL sources and produces Data Docs
