OrbStack
by OrbStack (Orbital Labs) · Application
macOS application that runs Docker containers, Linux machines and a local Kubernetes cluster as a lighter replacement for Docker Desktop
Overview
OrbStack is a proprietary macOS application that provides a Docker-compatible container engine, full Linux virtual machines and an optional single-node Kubernetes cluster on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. It reuses the standard Docker CLI, Compose files and images, so existing workflows carry over, while its own virtualization layer aims at low memory use, fast start-up and transparent file sharing and networking between macOS and the guest.
It is typically adopted by developers who want Docker Desktop's convenience on a Mac without that product's resource footprint or licensing terms. The documentation states that macOS 14.0 or newer is required and that Intel and Apple Silicon builds are separate. OrbStack is free for personal, non-commercial use; business use requires a paid Pro subscription, with an Enterprise option for organizations. The GitHub repository hosts issues and release notes rather than the application's source code, so it should be treated as closed source.
Capabilities
- Docker-compatible engine usable with the standard docker and docker compose CLIs
- Lightweight Linux machines (Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Alpine and others) with shared files and SSH access
- Optional local Kubernetes cluster
- Automatic HTTPS domains for containers and machines on the local network
- Menu-bar GUI with container, volume and image management
Typical workflows
- Replace Docker Desktop on a development Mac
- Run a Linux shell for tooling that lacks macOS builds
- Spin up a throwaway Kubernetes cluster for manifests testing
Strengths
- Low idle resource use compared with VM-based alternatives
- Drop-in for existing Docker CLI and Compose usage
- Rosetta-based x86 emulation on Apple Silicon
Limitations
- macOS only; requires a recent macOS release
- Closed source; commercial use requires a paid license
- Smaller ecosystem than Docker Desktop for extensions and enterprise controls
Prerequisites
- Mac running macOS 14.0 or newer
Who it is for
- Developers on macOS
- Teams standardizing on Apple Silicon laptops
Alternatives & comparison
Docker Desktop is the vendor-supported reference on macOS with broader enterprise features; Podman with podman machine is the fully open-source route. OrbStack sits between them: proprietary, macOS-specific, and oriented toward efficiency on Apple hardware.
