OpenFIGI
by Bloomberg L.P. (FIGI Registration Authority) · API service · also known as FIGI, Financial Instrument Global Identifier
Free API and web tool from Bloomberg for mapping tickers, ISINs, CUSIPs and other identifiers to public-domain FIGI instrument identifiers, with search and filter endpoints
Overview
OpenFIGI is the public access point for the Financial Instrument Global Identifier (FIGI), an open symbology standard adopted by the Object Management Group for which Bloomberg acts as registration authority and certified provider. The API's v3 endpoints accept JSON POST requests: /mapping converts batches of third-party identifiers (ticker, ISIN, CUSIP, SEDOL and others, optionally filtered by exchange, currency or security type) to FIGIs with descriptive metadata; /search and /filter find instruments by keyword with pagination; and a values endpoint lists valid enumerations. A free API key sent in the X-OPENFIGI-APIKEY header raises the request and job limits that apply to anonymous use.
The terms of service dedicate FIGI identifiers to the public domain irrevocably, allowing use, modification and redistribution for any purpose including to one's own customers, which makes FIGI a convenient join key for research datasets that mix vendors. Caveats are that descriptive metadata beyond the identifier is provided as-is, coverage of corporate actions and historical identifier changes is not the API's purpose, and rate limits make very large mapping jobs slow without a key.
