MongoDB
by MongoDB, Inc. · Database · also known as MongoDB Community Server, MongoDB Atlas
Document database storing BSON documents with a rich aggregation pipeline, available as a source-available Community Server or the managed Atlas service
Overview
MongoDB is a document-oriented database developed by MongoDB, Inc. Data is stored as BSON documents grouped in collections, with flexible schemas, secondary indexes and an aggregation pipeline for transformations and analytics. Replica sets provide high availability and sharding distributes collections across nodes. Multi-document ACID transactions, change streams, time-series collections and Atlas Search and Vector Search are part of the current platform.
The Community Server is licensed under the Server Side Public License (SSPL), which the Open Source Initiative does not classify as open source, so it is recorded here as source-available. MongoDB Atlas is the managed multi-cloud service with a free tier and usage-based clusters; Enterprise Advanced covers self-managed commercial deployments. Official drivers exist for the major languages, and the Mongoose and Prisma ecosystems are common in JavaScript projects.
MongoDB suits applications whose records are naturally nested and whose schema evolves quickly; relational joins and strict constraints are weaker than in SQL systems, and the SSPL limits offering it as a hosted service.
Capabilities
- BSON document storage with flexible schemas
- Aggregation pipeline for transformation and analytics
- Replica sets and sharding for availability and scale
- Multi-document ACID transactions and change streams
- Time-series collections
- Atlas Search and Vector Search in the managed service
Typical workflows
- Content and catalog storage for web and mobile apps
- Event and log ingestion with time-series collections
- Vector search for RAG in Atlas
Strengths
- Schema flexibility for evolving document models
- Official drivers for most languages
- Managed service with a free tier
Limitations
- SSPL restricts offering MongoDB as a service
- Joins and multi-collection constraints weaker than SQL
- Vector and full-text search features are tied to Atlas
Prerequisites
- A server or container, or an Atlas account
Who it is for
- Application developers
- Teams building document-centric APIs
