MkDocs
by MkDocs project (Tom Christie and contributors) · Application
Python static site generator for project documentation that builds a navigable site from Markdown files and a single YAML configuration
Overview
MkDocs is a static site generator for software documentation written in Python and released under the BSD-2-Clause license. A project is a directory of Markdown files and a mkdocs.yml file describing the site name, navigation and theme; the build command produces a self-contained HTML site that can be served from any web server or GitHub Pages, and a development server rebuilds on file changes.
Most of its practical reach comes from the ecosystem around it: the Material for MkDocs theme adds search, navigation tabs, versioning hooks, admonitions and dark mode, and plugins such as mkdocstrings generate API reference pages from Python docstrings. MkDocs is a common choice for Python libraries, internal runbooks and tool documentation where a simple Markdown-first workflow is preferred over Sphinx's reStructuredText or a JavaScript framework. Limits include dependence on third-party themes and plugins for features that other generators ship by default, no built-in versioned documentation (handled by the mike tool), and weaker support for multi-language API references outside Python.
Capabilities
- Markdown source with YAML navigation configuration
- Live-reloading development server
- Theme and plugin system (Material, mkdocstrings)
- Built-in search index
- Static output deployable to any host or GitHub Pages
Typical workflows
- Document a Python package with auto-generated API pages
- Publish internal runbooks from a Git repository
- Deploy documentation on every push with GitHub Actions
Strengths
- Simple configuration and fast setup
- Markdown-only authoring
- BSD license
Limitations
- Advanced features depend on third-party themes and plugins
- No built-in versioning
- API reference generation is strongest for Python
Prerequisites
- Python; install with uv or pip
Who it is for
- Python library maintainers
- Teams writing technical documentation
Alternatives & comparison
Sphinx is the older Python documentation system with reStructuredText, cross-referencing and the broadest API-documentation support, at the cost of more configuration. Docusaurus is a React-based generator suited to documentation with interactive components and versioning built in. Quarto targets scientific and computational documents with executable code rather than software reference docs.
