Deno

Secure-by-default JavaScript and TypeScript runtime from Deno Land with web-standard APIs, built-in tooling and an optional hosted Deploy service
Overview
Deno is a JavaScript and TypeScript runtime created by Node.js author Ryan Dahl and developed by Deno Land. It runs on V8 with a Rust core, executes TypeScript natively, and restricts file, network and environment access unless permissions are granted on the command line. The binary bundles a formatter, linter, test runner, documentation generator and a compiler that produces standalone executables.
Deno favors web-standard APIs (fetch, Web Streams, Web Crypto) so code can move between browser, server and edge environments, and since version 2 it supports npm packages and most Node.js APIs for compatibility. Deno Land also operates Deno Deploy, a hosted edge platform, and the JSR package registry. The runtime is free and MIT-licensed; Deploy is a commercial service with a free tier. Limitations include a smaller ecosystem of Deno-first libraries, occasional gaps in Node compatibility, and permission flags that add friction for scripts expecting unrestricted access.
Capabilities
- TypeScript execution without configuration
- Permission model for file, network and environment access
- Built-in formatter, linter, test runner and doc generator
- npm and Node.js compatibility layer
- Compile scripts to standalone executables
- JSR package registry integration
Typical workflows
- Write a TypeScript script with explicit permissions and run it as a cron job
- Deploy an edge function to Deno Deploy
- Compile a CLI into a single executable for distribution
Strengths
- Security-oriented defaults
- Web-standard APIs shared with browsers
- Tooling bundled in one binary
Limitations
- Smaller Deno-first ecosystem than npm
- Node compatibility is good but not exhaustive
- Deploy is a proprietary hosted service
Prerequisites
- macOS, Linux or Windows; install script, Homebrew or Cargo
Who it is for
- TypeScript developers
- Teams building edge or serverless functions
- Developers who value sandboxed scripting
Alternatives & comparison
Node.js has the broadest package compatibility and the longest track record; Deno trades some of that for a permission model and web-standard APIs. Bun shares Deno's goal of a batteries-included runtime but prioritizes Node compatibility and raw speed over sandboxing.
